total hysterectomy: A complete removal of the uterus along with the cervix and often including the ovaries and fallopian tubes.
uterine artery embolization (UAE): A catheterization procedure in which a flexible tube is inserted into a vein or artery for observation of blockage or other disorders and in the case of fibroids, can travel through the uterine arteries and inject an agent that will cause the tumors to die.
uterine leiomyomas: Also called fibroids, benign cysts, uterine fibroids.
uterus: The portion of the female reproductive system that is designed to hold and nurture a fetus during pregnancy and comprised of the upper "corpus" and the cervix along with an outer layer (serosa), middle layer (myometrium) and an inner layer (endometrium or mucosa).
watchful waiting: A common technique of treating fibroid symptoms without electing surgical procedures and may be most effective in older women who are approaching menopause, at which time the fibroids may shrink or disappear on their own.
